FREQUENTLY ASKED RESIDENTIAL PAINTING QUESTIONS
WHAT GOES INTO CREATING A PAINTING ESTIMATE?
To begin the process of obtaining your painting estimate, reach out to Devin McHale, the owner of McHale’s Painters, via phone or email. Understanding the specifics of your painting project—like wall types, paint preferences, and the size of the area—allows us to provide the most accurate estimate. Once we have those details, we'll prepare an estimate based on the costs of labor and materials
WHAT MAKES SOME PAINTS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS?
Inexpensive paints are often heavily diluted with solvents and contain lower-quality pigments and resins. While they may look appealing initially, budget paints typically require more coats and frequent reapplications. In contrast, high-quality paints are less diluted, resulting in a beautiful, durable finish that will stand the test of time. Choosing high-quality paint ensures your project will look great for years to come.
DO YOU USE OIL-BASED OR LATEX-BASED PAINTS?
We use both types of paint based on the specific needs of each job.
Latex paints are the most widely available option on the market. We typically use water-based latex paints for most projects, including interior walls, drywall, stucco, and wood surfaces.
Oil-based paints are ideal for covering wood trim, doors, and metal surfaces, as well as for priming certain areas to prevent bleed-through. They offer a smooth, glossy finish and are more resistant to wear and tear.
CAN YOU PAINT LATEX OVER A SURFACE THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY PAINTED WITH OIL?
Yes, we can do that, but the surface needs to be sanded and primed first. Oil-based paints have a glossy finish, and applying latex-based paint directly onto a glossy surface can prevent proper bonding, resulting in a less professional appearance.
HOW MUCH DO PAINTERS CHARGE?
We evaluate several factors when pricing a painting job, including the size of the room, the number of rooms, the number of paint coats needed, and the costs of labor and materials.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR YOUR VISIT?
To prepare your home for painting, begin by clearing the area of furniture, rugs, and decor, either moving items to the center of the room or into another room. Clean the walls to eliminate dust and grease for better paint adhesion. Remove light switch and outlet covers, as well as curtains from windows. Lastly, keep pets and children away from the workspace for safety. These steps will help ensure a smooth painting process!
